The mean diameter of particles detached from meteor bodies by thermal stresses is calculated. It is assumed that fracture occurs in the surface layer. With the assumptions made it is found that the relative depth of the fracture layer does not depend on the radius of the body or its velocity, but is determined by the physicomechanical properties of the meteor body. A comparison is made with the results of observations, by the photographic method, of particles separated from meteors during flares. Results obtained in experiments in which a plasma jet interacted with iron-oxide minerals are also analyzed.
