Studies of the thermal destruction of meteor bodies are analyzed. Problems associated with the use of the solution to the thermoelastic problem in the quasi-static formulation are examined. A relation between the velocity of heat front propagation and the rate of body surface destruction is used to study the thermal destruction of the surface layer of a homogeneous and monolithic body. It is found that the mechanism of thermal destruction is related to the production of bright meteors. The results are used to explain the presence of flares in bright meteors and the absence of flares in the field of faint meteors.
