The generation of planetary magnetic fields is discussed. The nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic problem of thermal convection driven dynamo is formulated and solved numerically. The analysis proceeds in three steps: (1) the problem of nonmagnetic finite amplitude convection is solved; (2) the velocity field is used to solve the induction equation for the magnetic field with vanishing growth rate; and (3) the resulting magnetic field is used as the starting point of an iterative approach to the solution of the full magnetohydrodynamic problem.
