Two different types of cryogenic thermal reactions have been indicated in astrophysical ice analogs. First, a very low activation barrier allows reactions between acids and bases and the formation of ions. Second, in the presence of traces of NH_3, formaldehyde polymerizes at temperatures in excess of ~ 60 K. The possible relevance of cryogenic thermal reactions in forming cometary matter is discussed.
