The basic concepts underlying magnetic reconnection in a magnetofluid plasma are briefly reviewed. On this basis, an overview on the numerous ideas and results on magnetic reconnection in two dimensions is given. Central topics covered are the role of dissipative effects in stagnation point flows, non-linear hyperbolic effects and the appearance of shock waves, Petschek's model of rapid reconnection, steady-state versus spontaneous reconnection, the solution of the linear magnetohydrodynamic wave problem for the half plane, both incompressible and compressible, and the relevance of the imposed boundary conditions.
