Rates of supernovae of type Ia, Ib, and II are predicted for the Galaxy and M31, computed according to ideas on supernova progenitors, and compared with observational information. Also, constraints for theories of SN progenitors and galactic chemical evolution models and problems in the study of SNae are discussed. Results suggest that type Ia SNae should originate from systems of double C-O white dwarfs, exploding by C-deflagration after merging due to gravitational wave emission, while Type Ib might be the result of an off-center He-detonation on accreting C-O white dwarfs in binary systems. Type II SNae should be the consequence of core collapse and envelope ejection of single massive stars. The predicted ratios of different supernova types are in good agreement with observations.
