The principal concepts in the theory of multipole transitions are
reviewed. Dirac theory is considered. The discussion covers magnetic
multipole radiation, selection rules, interference effect, and
two-photon emission. The chief experimental results on radiation of the
forbidden lines M2, 2E1, and selected X-ray lines are summarized.
