UBV photographic photometry of 404 stars, to a limiting magnitude of V = 17.2 is used to investigate the young open cluster Ruprecht 55. A distance of 5 kpc with a foreground B-V color excess of 0.58 mag and an age of less than 10 billion years is estimated for the cluster. Star counts using the Cosmos measuring machine confirm the lack of central condensation of this cluster and it is suggested that Ruprecht 55 may be part of a more extensive association of OB stars.
