The XMM-Newton Galaxy Cluster Structure Legacy Project consists of 900 ks of observations of an unbiased, statistically well described sample of 33 clusters (z < 0.2) selected from the REFLEX survey. This sample provides a unique dataset with which to carry out comprehensive studies of galaxy cluster structure and scaling relations, crucial for the use of clusters in cosmological studies. It will be an ideal benchmark sample for a wide range of studies, and multiwavelength follow-up programmes in support of the project are in progress. X-ray observations have recently been completed, and I shall present first results, including detailed investigations of cluster temperature profiles, gas distributions, and entropy profiles. I shall also discuss the expected long-term scientific outcomes of the project, which include an improved understanding of how the global scaling relations are affected by cluster physics, such as mergers and AGN activity.
