Fanaroff Riley II radio galaxies (FRIIs) can be divided into three subclasses based on their optical spectral properties: 1) objects with broad emission lines (BLO); 2) objects with high ionization narrow lines, which are considered obscured versions of BLO; 3) objects with low ionization narrow lines, whose optical properties are very similar to FRIs. We use the available data from the Chandra and XMM-Newton archives to investigate the nuclear properties of FRIIs. We show that the X-ray spectroscopy is able to discriminate between the three subclasses, and provides important clues on the physical conditions at the core of FRIIs.
