Optical spectroscopy and photometry of two stars in the errorbox of the X-ray transient source 3A 1431-409 are presented. One of these stars has the spectrum of a very active star, with unusually strong emission at H-alpha, and narrow emission in the Ca II H and K cores, as seen in RS CVn systems. The other star has the spectrum of a late-type giant, with no emission features that would indicate the presence of X-ray activity in the system. Due to their proximity some confusion exists in the literature as to which of these stars is the catalogued variable V532 Cen. The giant is identified with V532 Cen, and it is probably a Cepheid variable. It is proposed that the emission-line star, although of rather high inferred X-ray luminosity (more than 10 to the 33rd erg/s), even for an RS CVn type, is the likely optical counterpart of the X-ray source 3A 1431-409.
