A class of `fossil' groups has been discovered. Most L* galaxies in these groups have merged into a normal, relaxed, giant elliptical galaxy. Fossil groups thus appear to be very old. They represent an end-point of galaxy merging and may be the evolutionary link between compact groups and giant elliptical galaxies. We propose an ACIS study of these old groups to (a) study the environment of giant elliptical formation and (b) to understand their unusual properties: a very high X-ray luminosity for their temperature, and a remarkably elongated X-ray surface brightness, indicative of a very anisotropic dark matter distribution. These properties have important implications for the impact of preheating at early epochs and the formation of structures within dark matter filaments.
