Measurements of the radial velocity of the highly evolved star UV5 in
the globular cluster NGC 1851 indicate that it is variable with a 15-day
period. Photometrically, the star does not appear to vary, but H-beta
occasionally shows an emission component. On the basis of these
characteristics, UV5 is put forward as the X-ray source in NGC 1851.
