The technical and organizational aspects of an astronomical photography laboratory are outlined. One section is entirely concerned with direct UK Schmidt telescope plate contact copying on glass and film. The other section is devoted to all other photography in support of astronomy and its publicity, together with more conventional areas of work, such as neg/pos color and monochrome printing, studio work, flat copy copying, photomacrography, slide manufacture, and hand processing of 35 mm, 120, 5 x 4 in and larger films. Photofinishing and process control of color equipment are carried out in an attached office where hand cameras and equipment are also stored. Projects include a near infrared film atlas, and equatorial J survey, a reference manual of objective prism spectra, and selenium toning of Schmidt telescope plates.
