Cold atomic hydrogen is present in dark clouds and several authors have pointed out an apparent correlation between CO emission and H I self-absorption. From mapping of the W 80 dark cloud in CO, 13C0, H2CO and H I we find the H I self-absorption regions to be identical with the most dense (H2CO) clumps which are embedded in the less dense gas traced by CO. We show that this is an effect of different H I spin temperatures in and outside the clumps and discuss its probable cause.
