A volume density distribution model is constructed for the example of the moon by assuming that the density in the crust is a continuous function of coordinates on regional scales and that the first- and second-order derivatives are also continuous. The density variation in the lunar interior is assumed to satisfy the Adams-Willamson equation in the first approximation. Values of the lunar central density and another parameter are determined in terms of contemporary values for the moon's total moment of inertia with respect to the rotational axis, as obtained from experimental data on the physical libration and average density of the moon. A more complex model is developed which takes into account the radial and horizontal density variations in the lunar interior. A formula is given for determining the volume distribution of mass density in the lunar interior for the external gravitational potential of the moon.
