Instrumentation designed to support remote sensing of planetary surfaces by an infrared multispectral imager is described. The OMEGA (French acronym for observatory for mineralogy, water, ice and activity) - VIMS (Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer) infrared spectrometer is described in detail. The French and American built spectrometer is designed to map the Martian surface, analyze surface mineralogy, chemical composition, and recognize geological units at a regional level while carried on the Soviet mission to Mars. The visible channel of the OMEGA-VIMS spectrometer is discussed in detail. It is designed to extend the mapping capability, of the spectrometer towards short wavelengths.
