Since the advent of the WWW, astronomy has been at the forefront for the provision of on-line services (data archives, value-added databases, services, electronic journals) which have revolutionized astronomers' daily research work. The VO is the next step, allowing seamless access to data and services, and providing tools to integrate the heterogeneous information retrieved from services distributed all around the world. The VO, now in transition from development to operations, is a key infrastructure element to optimize the scientific return of the large astronomical facilities.
