Until recently, the angular resolution of large, ground-based optical telescopes, which is usually limited to about one second by atmospheric effects, was unapproached in other regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. However, at centimeter wavelengths, advances based on interferometry have now led to the design of arrays with a resolution finer than one second. In a Fourier synthesis array, signals from different antennas are combined in pairs in voltage-multiplier circuits, the outputs of which are averaged over time. A review of the technique of synthesis imaging is presented. Array geometry considerations are discussed along with sensitivity considerations, phase stability considerations, the signal transmission system, the delay and correlation system, the Very Large Array (VLA) control system, and data reduction requirements.
