Three spectral indices based on the Rose (1984) system have been used to obtain the spectral type and surface gravity of each star, and Fe/H for all stars with spectral type later than F6, in a complete sample of stars down to B = 12.5 in a 5 x 5 deg field at the South Galactic Pole. While for B below 11 there are approximately equal numbers of early and late F stars, at B above 11 the early F stars vanish and leave an abrupt cut-on at spectral time F7 (B-V = 0.50). The distribution of the fainter late-F stars are compared with a simulated thick disk population based on the Hesser et al. (1987) BV photometry of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae; it is found that the majority of the thick disk population is as old as 47 Tucanae.
