Infrared Fourier spectrometers on Venera 15 and 16 obtained spectra of Venus in the 250-1600/cm range (40-6 microns) with a resolution of approximately 5/cm. The measurements were made primarily along paths situated in the northern hemisphere at latitudes not below 20 deg. The design of the instrument is described along with its characteristics and the program of operations in orbit. Sample spectra and brightness-temperature profiles along the measurement path are presented, and some of their characteristics are noted, including the different character of the spectra in polar and medium latitudes, the presence of hot spots, and the absence of thermal asymmetry.
