The kinematical state of the Orion Nebula cluster has been studied using newly determined proper motions for the 73 stars brighter than V ≡ 12.5 lying within one-half degree of the Trapezium. The proper motions were obtained from an analysis of PDS measures of 138 plates that spanned a time interval of 77 yr, which resulted in an average proper-motion accuracy of ±0.15(s.e) milliarsec/yr. These proper motions have been used to determine the probabilities of membership in the cluster by means of a new method described in this paper. Based on a combination of new and existing spectra and photoelectric photometry, a reddening-corrected color-magnitude diagram has been obtained and the proper-motion dispersions derived for various subsets of members in the color-magnitude diagram and in radial distance from the cluster center.
