The field of variable stars is one which attracts many since they may be studied with a wide range of equipment, from the naked eye to large telescopes, and by the use of photographic, photo-electric and charge coupled device techniques. Since the Section's formation in 1891, one year after the Association's founding, its observers have aspired to high quality results through systematic, standardised methods. Even in the modern electronic era only a handful of observers provide totally objective, measured magnitudes and the vast bulk of the Section's database consists of visual estimates of magnitude made through relatively simple instruments. Because such useful work can be carried out with relatively inexpensive equipment the work of the visual observer is still of vital importance.
