A principal components analysis of the chemical potentials of the common participants in a number of chemical interactions may reveal linear combinations of these potentials with variances of close to zero. Each of these combinations defines an equilibrium constant. Application of this method to the results of acid dissolution experiments on montmorillonite revealed an equilibrium between a high-Si derivative of montmorillonite and aluminum ions, hydrogen ions and dissolved silica.
