Thermodynamics Of Plasmas

Scientific paper

The advent of MJ class lasers such a the NIF and the LMJ will provide the scientific community with an important tool to study matter under extreme conditions of pressure and temperature as well as X-ray and neutron irradiation. Specifically, in conjunction with hohlraum targets, it should become possible to study the equations of state, and opacities of meteorites-as analogs to asteroids, simulated comet material, as well as to reproduce conditions at the Earth's core using Fe/Ni and other trace component targets. We present estimates of the response to pressure and radiation for typical stony and Fe/Ni meteorites as well as for suggested comet models. Experiments on meteorites and related natural materials present challenges since they lack homogeneity; also comet analogs may be porous posing problems of fabrication, characterization and interpretation. In order to simulate conditions in outer space, experiments on some planetary materials will need to be at cryogenic temperatures.
