The scaling method using the NLR forbidden O III line emission in AGN is applied to a series of spectral simulations for Akn 120 in order to estimate the reliability of the method in deriving the visible continuum level. It is found that the measured W(cal) (forbidden O III) can significantly depart form its constant value assumed in the simulation, which leads to an incorrect estimate of the visible continuum. The amplitude of this effect depends on the measuring procedure and can be as large as 30 percent. In addition it is correlated with the activity stage of the AGN.
