The SEVIRI imager on current generation of geostationary Meteosat has 12 channels with a horizontal resolution of 3 km at the sub-satellite point. EUMETSAT cloud processing includes the cloud detection (cloud/no cloud decision) on pixel basis with an image update cycle of 15 minutes. The cloud mask product is used during the period 2007-2010 to assess the quality of a mountain site in the Moroccan Anti Atlas for astronomical observing. The performance of the satellite data extraction algorithm is tested against ground based measurements performed at a well established reference site: the Observatory Roque de los Muchachos (ORM) on the Island of La Palma.
