The evolution of the active nucleus of NGC 4151 on time scales ranging from days to 10 yrs based on IUE observations. A detailed study is presented of the long- and short-term temporal behavior of the wings of the C IV and Mg II lines and the variations of the semiforbidden C III line. The results are interpreted as due to the redistribution or rearrangement of the fast-moving gas on a time scale of one to a few yrs, probably in the form of the arrival of a new gas cloud in the inner part of the broad-line region.
