Spectrophotometric observations performed in 1974 and 1975 show that the
excess light from U Cephei is due to hydrogen free-free and free-bound
emission. The phase dependence of the excess light is discussed in terms
of a mass-exchange model for U Cep. The 1974 mass-exchange rate is
estimated to be about 3 ten-millionths of a solar mass per year.
