The ultradeep XMM exposure in the Chandra Deep Field South will provide the most sensitive survey of the hard X-ray sky reaching the confusion limit in the 5-10 keV band and thus targeting a yet unexplored discovery space. The XMM high energy throughput will allow us to study with unprecedented detail the spectral properties of a large sample (~ 100) of heavily obscured and Compton Thick AGN at the redshift peak of their activity (z~1-2). Thanks to the excellent multiwavelength coverage we will assess the role of accreting SMBH in the context of galaxy evolution. The proposed program (approved for about half of the total request in AO7) will create an XMM legacy and a pathfinder for future missions (i.e. IXO)
