Requirements for a direct experimental search for the hypothetical weakly interacting massive particles which might make up the missing matter in the halo of our Galaxy are outlined. The UK underground low background facility is described. Various detection techniques are discussed in the context of a progressive development programme, starting with simple less sensitive experiments and leading to more complex and sensitive instruments, possibly involving hybrid techniques.
