The type Ia supernova (SN Ia) rate in galaxy clusters can be a powerful probe of both the SN Ia progenitor system and the intracluster medium of the clusters themselves. The cluster SN Ia rate has recently been measured at redshifts below 0.2, but only weak constraints based on one or two SNe exist at high redshift. We report a measurement of the SN Ia rate in galaxy clusters at 0.9 < z < 1.5 based on 9 cluster SNe Ia from the Hubble Space Telescope Cluster Supernova Survey (PI: Perlmutter; see Dawson et al. 2009), providing statistical errors comparable to low redshift measurements. We also use the fraction of hostless SNe in the clusters to place an upper limit on the amount of intracluster light at z > 0.9. This work has been supported by the Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy, through contract DE-AC02-05CH11231 and in part by NASA through grants associated with HST-GO-10496.
