The SDSS-II has completed the first 2 of a scheduled 3 year SN survey, with the primary goal of obtaining well measured light-curves of large number of type Ia SNe for the study of cosmology.
The SN survey repeatedly images 300 sq. degrees with a rapid cadence in the 5 photometric bands, SDSS ugriz, producing densely sampled multi-band light-curves for astrophysical transients over a large volume. These features of the survey allow for a measurement of the low-z type-Ia SN rate with minimal SN discovery bias and relatively well-controlled systematics.
The first two years of the survey have yielded >300 type-Ia SNe with >50 at a redshift <0.12. We present a detailed analysis of the low-z type-Ia SN rate from the first-year type-Ia SN sample and present a preliminary analysis of the second-year sample. We mention also the challenges of measuring the SN Ia rate at higher redshifts and our progress in this endeavor.
