It is shown that the unusual wavelength dependence of the interstellar extinction and polarization observed for the star W67 in NGC 2264 occurs because this is a very young, hot star still surrounded by protostellar material and, in addition, this material is immersed in an extended nebulosity. The dust is anomalous in the protostellar remnant and normal in the nebulosity. The anomalous dust contains only large particles, the mean size of which is roughly 1.6 times larger than usual. As a consequence of this, extremely anomalous extinction and polarization arise in the protostellar remnant, and are added to the corresponding normal components connected with the nebulosity and interstellar dust in the near background. Such a two-component model for the dusty medium along the line of sight allows detailed reproduction of the observed extinction and polarization. A more accurate formula describing the wavelength dependence of the interstellar polarization is found, which coincides extremely well with modern observational data in the visible and near infrared regions of the spectrum.
