The Turbulent Oxygen Mixing Experiment (TOMEX) combined lidar measurements, from Starfire Optical Range in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with a launch of a payload from the Sulf site launcher on the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR), located a little over 100 km from Starfire. The objective was to study, over the 80 to 110 km region, the relation between the existence of either convectively or dynamically unstable regions, and the generation of turbulence and enhanced eddy diffusion that would subsequently result in perturbed atomic oxygen profiles. In order to meet this objective a mother-daughter payload was developed, similar to the Coqui Dos payload, that included three experiments. The mother payload included a TMA release, developed at Clemson University, which would measure winds, diffusion, and reveal the presence or absence of billows associated with instability regions. The daughter payload included a three-channel photometer experiment to measure airglow emissions from which atomic oxygen densities could be inferred, and a five channel ionization gauge experiment which measured neutral density fluctuations from which turbulence could be inferred. The payload was to be launched when the the University of Illinois Na wind and temperature lidar probing the altitude region above the Sulf Site launcher, at the northern edge of WSMR, detected the presence of either a dynamically or convectively unstable region. The TOMEX payload was launched at 0957 UT on 26 October 2000 and successfully obtained data from all the experiments. This paper provides an introduction to the experiment and the characteristics of the atmosphere at the time of the launch.
