The Transit system, also known as the Navy Navigation Satellite System (NNSS), which provides a satellite system for global navigation, surveying, and time-distribution service is reviewed. This highly reliable, precise, all-weather navigation system is based on ten spacecraft, including two of Nova design and eight of Oscar/stacked Oscar on Scout design. The NNSS encompasses spacecraft in a nominal 600-nmi orbit, four ground control stations, and unlimited numbers of users. Only one spacecraft is required to provide full system precision. The opportunity for a navigation fix improves as the number of spacecraft in orbit increases.
