In the Milky Way, soft X-ray transients are a class of low-mass X-ray binaries that are dominated by binaries whose compact object is a black hole. These sources were expected to be common among bright X-ray binaries in nearby galaxies; however multi-epoch observations of nearby early-type galaxies in Chandra's first decade revealed a population dominated by more persistent sources. As part of the Centaurus A Very Large Project with Chandra, we have performed the deepest X-ray observations of X-ray binaries in an early-type galaxy, revealing the largest active X-ray binary population in any galaxy to date. We summarize the Centaurus A Very Large Project and present results from the initial catalog, including the discovery of 10 X-ray binaries in Centaurus A that are clearly transient and may harbor black holes, as well as approximately 40 other more weakly identified transients candidates, and another approximate 100 that exhibit variability. We compare the behavior, both individually and as a population, of transient and variable X-ray binaries found in Centaurus A to that discovered by variability studies in other galaxies, including the Milky Way.
