The 11,900-km path of the band of totality of the solar eclipse is characterized. It is shown to extend over the South Indian Ocean and the Coral Sea, touching land at near noon (local time) over Java and Celebes in Indonesia. The maximum duration of totality, 5 min 15 sec, is found to be among the longest in this century and in the saros cycle. Details on the Indonesian part of the path and a description of the sky around the darkened sun are given. Meteorological data indicating a 65 percent chance of undisturbed observation for the northeast Java site are presented.
