The validity of the law of diffusive equilibrium in the thermosphere is examined. The theoretical approach and the results of rocket probe analyses regarding thermospheric species distributions, temperatures, and vertical velocities are presented. It is shown that the lower thermosphere is in a nonequilibrium state. Analysis of mass spectrometric data using a coupled multicomponent theory results in species flow systems and profiles which cause one to question the presently accepted techniques for modeling the lower-thermospheric species distribution using satellite drag densities, the density determinations by incoherent backscatter radars once the temperature below about 400 km is given, the temperature determined by single-species measurement, and the flow diagrams obtained from consideration of the meridional differences in lower-thermospheric heating and species productions
