Theoretical considerations and hypotheses indicate that plasma instabilities of various kind are responsible for such stellar processes as luminosity variations, flare phenomena, mixing, etc. In the present analysis, it is shown that degenerate cores of sufficiently hot white dwarfs are susceptible to a thermodynamic instability which generates a magnetic field and excites hydrodynamic motions. The necessary conditions for the onset of this instability are identified, along with the parameters of the instability region. The characteristic time scales of the instability are assessed, and some effects of the instability are examined.
