An expression is obtained for the magnetic fields of bipolar sunspots and used to derive formulas for energies of twisted and potential magnetic fields, the extractable free magnetic energy, magnetic flux, the force-free factor, the field decay factor, and the distance between the centers of two spots. These formulas, which may be used in the forecasting of solar flares, are applied to the active region of July 1978.
