The authors present optical and radio observations of the region of the Taurus complex located around the position of the radiosource 3C 111. They performed prism-objective classification and UBV photometry of field stars and found that the visual extinction, in a line of sight up to 800 pc, is due to two absorption layers whose distance was estimated. They identified the more distant layer as the molecular cloud studied in the paper. By means of star counts and millimeter observations, the authors mapped the visual extinction and the C18O emission. They discuss the large scale density and velocity structure of this region and the correlation between C18O column density and visual extinction.
