The processes involved in the synthesis of color images of the Martian surface from material transmitted by Mars 5 are discussed. The images were color-separated by a succession of four filters (blue, green, orange, and red). Following the identification and removal of reference marks, the separated images were subjected to two-dimensional filtration. The contrast was then corrected, and photoregistration of the color-separated negatives was carried out using a polygraph technique. The mean color tone of the photograph was determined from earth-based spectrophotometric data.
