Linearized equations of hydrodynamics for the vertically inhomogeneous atmosphere, with allowance for viscosity and thermal diffusivity, are used to analyze the field of short internal gravity waves in the reflection region. It is suggested that the generation of turbulence in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere is determined by the 'swelling' of the field of the gravity waves near the wave-reflection point. The theoretical results are compared with available experimental data.
