The rate of accretion of the interstellar medium onto a star is discussed. It is shown that this is a complex, fractionated process. The relative abundances of heavy elements accreting onto the star are very different from the abundances in the ambient medium. These accretion rates are important in determining the abundances on the surfaces of white dwarf stars.
