The radio double source Cygnus A at a distance of 560 million light years is considered. The radio emission of this source has its origin mainly in two components which owe its existence apparently to a jet. This jet was ejected at approximately the velocity of light from a central galaxy into two opposite directions. The two radio 'bubbles' of Cygnus A have a distance of one million light years from each other. For a few million years, they emit a total amount of radio energy which is a hundred times as large as the total luminosity of the Galaxy. It has now become apparent, that the structure of Cygnus A is typical for the appearance of radio double sources. The development of the jet model is discussed, taking into account VLBI measurements of the central galactic regions conducted with several radio telescopes, and the existence of ultracompact regions of possibly only the size of the solar system in the interior of the central galaxy or the quasar. Attention is given to the concept of a de Laval nozzle, shock waves in the double exhaust, the evolution of a Mach 6 flow, and computational experiments.
