Long base observations of the Orionid and Eta Aquarid meteor showers show structural features (secondary maxima, gradual shift of peak rates, etc.) which can be related to the orbital history of the parent comet. There are different possibilities to fit the observational data with theories of the motion of particles ejected from the comet. The long-term evolution of particle orbits leading to the formation of belts is compared with the relatively short-term diffusion process of ejected particles. The efficiency of both processes on the formation of the meteor stream is studied. The comparison of the theoretical limits for the spatial distribution of particles with the observational data confirms the long age of the stream and of the comet.
