Best fit ellipses have been fitted with a high degree of accuracy to the isophotes of the elliptical galaxy IC 4296 obtained from J and R photographs with the SERC 1.2 m Schmidt camera and the Anglo Australian Telescope. Changes of ellipticity, of position angle of the major axes and of the centroids of these ellipses as a function of distance from the nucleus have been found. J and R aperture photometry was also performed on the same data arrays. The nuclear regions are shown to be very red compared with the halo. The fast rotation of IC 4296 is discussed in relation to IC 4299.
