Radio recombination line and continuum observations of the compact HII region Orion B are presented. The angular resolution is 1 arcmin. The distribution of H76alpha over the whole continuum source and, to a lesser extent, that of He76alpha and C76alpha are given. A geometrical model is suggested in which ionized gas at the main ionization front in the south is accelerated continuously from zero velocity (relative to the neighboring molecular cloud) up to more than 10 km/sec to the north and towards the observer. This acceleration is accompanied by a systematic increase in the turbulence of the gas flow. Ionized carbon is emitted primarily from a region just outside the ionization front in the south. The continuum and helium line observations support the role of the star NGC 2024 No. 1 as a secondary source of excitation. The main exciting source should be located close to star No. 2.
