Vertical sounding data of ionosphere, obtained from ground-based stations located near polar caps during the SUNDIAL measurements between May 25 and June 6, 1987, particularly the data on electron concentrations at the E- and F-region maxima, are systematized. It is shown that the diffusion reflection data obtained at the Vostok and the Mirnyi stations can be classified into five types, depending on the mechanism of formation: (1) reflections of the regular-layer type with delayed radio signal in the critical frequency region; (2) the 'FLIZ'-type reflection, not depending on frequency; (3) the cloudlike reflection without a definite reflection layer; (4) low-frequency (1-2.5 MHz) reflection; and (5) reflection from the region of high ionization (6-8 MHz).
